ben neill - Night Science
Acclaimed sound scientist Ben Neill is probably best known for the creation of his Mutantrumpet in conjunction with Robert Moog, whilst his collaborations with everyone from Coil to Rhys Chatham and John Cage probably shouldn't go unremarked either. For his first new album in some time, Neill comes to Thirsty Ear alongside Eric Cam with a set of Dubstep-weight rhythms providing a solid but ever shifting ground for his mutantrumpet machinations. A close comparison for this pairing of styles may be Bass Clef, but Neill and Cam prefer to evoke darker feelings by largely favouring the spacious halfstep style and a more trad use of the trumpet as a brass instrument. 'Outland' recalls the barren landscapes of Clubroot, while 'Hearthrob' uses 808 cowbells and processed electro-acoustic trumpet treatments to create electronica worthy of FSOL. 'Booster' is probably the most successful cut, achieving a heady blend of ambient structures with garage charged bass. It never quite reaches the intensity of the best dubstep, but finds a neat balance between his mutant sonics and the latest rhythms-of-the-day.
