the clean - Mister Pop
This is quite a coup for Morr Music: a new album from New Zealand post-punk legends The Clean, one of the key signings to the legendary Flying Nun imprint and a band who've made an enormous impact on the landscape of what went on to become indie rock. Pavement, Yo La Tengo and a good many other artists of that generation would sound very different where it not for this group's work. Formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1978, it's fairly miraculous that the band are still sounding as vital as they do on 'In The Dreamlife U Need A Rubber Soul' and 'Factory Man', though it should be said that the new wave impetus of old has been incorporated into a broader range of sounds and influences, taking in elements of Brit-folk, country and on a song like 'Tensile', a bit of krautrock-styled electronic minimalism. One of the record's finest moments comes early on: 'Are You Really On Drugs' is a timeless piece of alternative rock efficiency that evokes the sublime sedation of Galaxie 500 with its cleanly picked chords and hazily downbeat vocal refrains.
