queen of japan - Tokyo Risen : A Compilation
The 80s, come on it wasn't that good was it?? I was there, I'm sure I don't remember it with that much fondness - ok so the Smiths, Prince and the Cure were good, and Sonic Youth were pretty much always on form, but pop music was... well for the most part pretty horrible. Why oh why then do we get set a constant stream of musicians queuing up to emulate the sound of 2nd rate 80s synthpop? It's so 1990's! Queen of Japan seem to be next in line, and manage to inject their brand of sleazy sexuality into this revivalist template. I can't say this is original stuff, but in all it's worrying energy and zany spunk, it's actually quite a lot of fun. At times it even reminds me of Blondie (which is a good thing!) if their over-reliance on cheesy retro sounds was curbed slightly, they might even stumble across a decent track every once in a while. Oh well, thank goodness they haven't covered 'Heart of Glass'.
