falty dl - Love Is A Liability
Back in stock. Falty DL aka Drew Lustman is a welcome addition to that slightly crowded nexus betwen electronics, dubstep and garage. His 12"s for Planet Mu and Ramp have set tongues wagging and ears-a-cockin' towards his soulful electronics, positioned as a funkier alternative to the more complex post-dubstep structures of Boxcutter. This rich seam of floor-friendly Funk that runs through his productions can possibly be attributed to his background, coming from NYC, the birthplace of the original Garage sound which has undoubtedly infected his rhythms wih a kinky swing and flex. His 'Human Meadow' track - caned by Mary Anne Hobbs and Jamie Vex'd - opens the show with a dazzling display of the elements that make Falty DL tracks so addictive, namely freshly squeezed synths, swinging UK/US garage rhythms, an uncanny knack for perfect vocal samples and off-the-cuff melodic motifs. When he steps into darker club spaces on 'Encompass' his impressive sound designs shine through beautifully spatialised atmospheres, while the almost obligatory Burial-influenced beat on 'Winter Sole' also succeeds through his technical expertise. 'The Shape To Come' heads out on that same juciy purple frontier as Jamie Vex'd, Joker or Guido with squealing P-Funk synthlines updated for the post-IDM crowd, before the return visit on 'The Shape Has Come' offers a melancholic version to close the set. We've gotta say respect for the cheb-heavy artwork and recommend this to any heads into the Vex'd/Joker/Planet Mu sound.
