jon hopkins - Insides
Having previously released two albums on the Absolute Zero label, Jon Hopkins has recently experienced something of a profile boost having contributed to Coldplay's most recent album and worked alongside Brian Eno. Now on Domino's Double Six imprint, Hopkins delivers an LP that keeps company with the works of Olafur Arnalds and Valgeir Sigurdsson in terms of grandiose neo-classical/electronica hybrids go. Hopkins is a little more forthcoming with complex beat designs than the majority of his contemporaries, meaning that pieces like 'Colour Eye' sound like a compelling hybrid of Autechre and a Peter Broderick solo piano routine. Similarly, for all its carefully composed string and piano passages 'Vessel' manages to throw some woofer-destroying kicks into the bargain without upsetting the balance, and 'A Drifting Up' casts airy orchestration alongside the pitter-patter of percussion that's more suggestive of tramping heavily through snow than actual drums. There's plenty of diversity on show here: 'Light Through The Veins' perhaps has something in common with Ulrich Schnauss' early output, deploying luscious synths and soaring melodies with the same effortlessness that presides over sparse piano interludes like 'Small Memory'. A very strong showing indeed...
