tenniscoats - Temporacha
This gorgeous album is built upon an unusual collaborative process between Tenniscoats and Room40 label boss Lawrence English. Prompted by the Japanese duo having been played some of English's new, field recording-based material, an album was proposed that would be based upon recordings of Tenniscoats songs in a variety of unlikely locales in Japan, ranging from parks and rivers to busier urban environments. 'Ninichime' is so entrenched in traffic noise you'd have to say it's less of a background element and more like an instrument in its own right. It's not all so confusing and 'displaced' sounding however, and pieces like 'Timeless' benefit greatly from the reverberant, sonically rich recording context. You'll hear the band's music coated in a wonderful natural echo whilst running water flows vibrantly. The collaboration is at its most effective on closing piece 'Hajimari / Owari - Dream Is Refreshing', when you're so enveloped by the song itself that the additional ambient sounds blend in organically and discreetly. Temporacha is always a fascinating listen - nicely dragging music out of the studio and into the less predictable, occasionally disruptive real world, - and it ruly flourishes when you start to forget about the concept. Gorgeous music - highly recommended.
