elliott carter - A Nonesuch Retrospective
Four discs and a 58-page booklet make up this wonderful boxset from Pulitzer Prize winning composer American composer Elliott Carter, spanning some forty years in his career. This finely presented collection is a timely release, helping celebrating Carter's recent 100th birthday, drawing on key interpretations recorded between the 1960s and 1990s by artists like Paul Jacobs and groups such as the London Sinfonietta and the New York Chamber Symphony. You can hear the grasp of modernism taking hold on Carter's work through the 1940s, developed into a dramatic, atonal style in later years. This is a rich, thoughtful collection of works, one which presents Carter's music within a variety of contexts, from piano sonatas to full-blown orchestra with strange ensemble configurations in between, such as the memorable Sonata For Flute, Oboe, Cello & Harpsichord. Carter even embraces lyricism with 1981's In Sleep, In Thunder, a piece featuring six texts by American poet Robert Lowell. A huge undertaking, this boxset offers a brilliant overview of the composer's work.
