ultre - The Nest And The Skull
A superb collection of electronica compositions from Finn McNicholas' Ultre project, combining hugely inventive beat programming with heavily treated string sounds. When McNicholas applies acoustic guitars to his formula the outcome is never anything so humdrum as folktronica, instead great tracks like 'Peace Corpse' impress with their flurried, obliterated melodies and wonderfully tactile drum sounds - imagine Arovane and Apparat at their most impressive. The album just seems to get better as it goes on, culminating in the grandstanding, compressed orchestrations of 'To All The Laughing You WIll Never Do' and 'A House Under Your Head'. A thoroughly commendable example of modern electronica.
