geeneus - Volumes: One
*Double Disc CD; Disc 1 features 9 exclusive Geeneus productions, Disc 2 is a bonus House + Funky club mix featuring all the current club hits and new productions exclusive to this release* So we heard the older side of Geeneus last week with his ace single for Blackdown's Keysound label, but if you've been following his blog or happen to have followed him through his grime to Funky transition, you won't be surprised with this new album for Rinse, for the rest of us it's one of those rare WTF moments?! To give you a quick lowdown, Geeneus is the clever fella behind the RinseFM radio station and has also been heavily involved with the Tempa and Soulja labels since their birth. He's been a majorly influential figure behind most of LDN's urban music movements over the last 10 years and has now moved to the prevailing winds of Funky, which is basically toughened and stripped, yet fluid and sexy house music made by ex-grime producers, with traces of their former style still apparent in the predilection for African rhythm flavours and sub heavy grooves. 'Volumes 1' is the first artist album devoted to this style, and Geeneus has seriously found the 'F' spot with this selection. From the first 1.5 mins of 'In To the Future' you'd be forgiven for thinking this was some Ben Klock project but when the keys are placed down you know you're somewhere different entirely. This definitely isn't Grime, but neither is it European techno or house, it just bears a strong resemblance to both, borrowing from European house and techno what grime lacked, the ability to make the females dance, and also that rolling club vibe that the hyper energies of Grime just couldn't sustain with it all getting a bit messy and getting your eye poked out with a stray gunfinger. Anyway, onto the massive anthem 'Yellowtail' which has recieved nuff attention from none other than Kode 9, who currently has a new Funky project coming to fruition under the name of Frankie Solaar, and is big with influential DJs like Marcus Nasty for it's succinct blend of irresistably socafied house rhythms and neon synth arrangements. 'Saturday' featuring a sultry vocal from Amy B also has massive potential on the airwaves, with a proper mid-90's housing freshness that's surely destined to be coming back round sometime soon, if it isn't already. We have to give a massive mention to the version of Benga & Coki's 'Night' at track 7, which is possibly one of the best remix jobs we've heard all year, turning the slighty grating original into a rude club starter with an aquatic-soca shimmer. This is utterly fresh, brilliantly entertaining and indelibly funked effort from Geeneus and is surely one of the most enjoyable and on-it albums of the year. We'd highly recommend dipping into this before exploring the very intriguing world of Funky. Killer.
