slomo - The Bog
The Bog is the follow-up to the similarly evocatively titled The Creep, 2005's debut album from the mighty Slomo, the duo of Howard Marsden and Holy McGrail, whose name you may recognise from Julian Cope's band - indeed, the ceaselessly entertaining Cope crops up on the record himself, offering a recital of his poem 'Land' by means of an epilogue to this sixty-five minute epic, but more on that later... There's something admirably pure and analog about the intensity and integrity of this vast doomscape of drone, and Slomo should be ranked way up there with the very finest exponents in the field, creating swirls of black cloud that could rival the frostbitten darkness of SunnO))) themselves. Using such tried and tested propagators of analogue gnarl as the Moog Taurus, Korg MS10 & MS20 the duo embark upon a voyage into the gloom populated by creaking electronics and vaporous disturbances from somewhere in the smudged out distance. Finally, amidst a sea of hiss and clattering noises, Julian Cope unleashes his specially penned poem in his best Crowley-esque intonation. So awesome...
