We can thank the crossover appeal of bands like SunnO))) for the surge in popularity of droning doom metal in recent years. There seems to be a surfeit of bands taking their guitars, restringing them with the thickest telegraph cables they can find, and sustaining the low notes for as long as they can muster. Of course, there's always a danger of stagnation within this sort of field, and not all this material is particularly inspired. Tecumseh are a band who come perilously close to sounding functional - as if they're going through all the right motions, but somehow lack the visceral impact of the genre's leaders. In engineering terms the sound isn't as refined or as otherworldly as perhaps it could have been, leading to some fairly dry passages of sustain. 'Skies Of Joy And Sorrow' starts off in an almost dark-ambient fashion, before distorted, detuned guitars and basses (yes, two basses) arrive to reinforce the heaviness, sludgily shifting within deliberately sinister sounding intervals. 'Travelling Alongside Death' is an abbreviated take on the same sort of strategy, while nineteen minute closer 'Cascadia' stumbles around like a groggy diplodocus propped up by cymbal swells, which helpfully add to the prolonged tension.
