desalvo - Mood Poisoner
Glaswegian noise makers DeSalvo mix personnel from Idlewild and Stretchheads, combining brazen hardcore influences with a more technical metal approach. Opener 'Brown Flag' blends a well-oiled harshness with a vocal that doesn't take itself too seriously, alternating between sounding like a crow cawing and the Laughing Policeman. The hard riffing that characterises this album is leant an added sense of potency thanks to the uncompromising production of Paul Savage (a veteran of Mogwai, Arab Strap and Malcolm Middleton recordings), who nicely over-saturates the mix, bringing extra punch to the array of down-tuned guitars. In a rare moment of tuneful, faux-epic styling, album closer 'Cock Swastika' is a good deal less unpleasant than its title, providing one of Mood Poisoner's very few moments of unencumbered melody in its later stages. However, for the majority of this thirty-five minute assault you'll find no such let up, and you can expect a sore head in the morning.
