vert - New Things At Novara
This rather unique album documents Adam Butler of Vert taking on an entire jazz festival, remixing all the various performances recorded over its duration. This disc harbours remixed excerpts of the event, sometimes taking the form of beats or other strands of additional production, while in some instances the entire recording is thoroughly scrambled. Butler does a fine job of integrating his own programming work into the instrumental workouts of assembled musicians like Matthew Shipp & Guillermo E Brown, David S Ware, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Moholo & Stan Tracey among others, tending to bring a machine-like rhythmic order to proceedings. Occasionally however, he barely intrudes at all, as is the case with the beautiful piano piece 'Fabrizio's Thing (Raga Del Cuore)'.
