lesser gonzalez alvarez - Why Is Bear Billowing?
Along with this week's Golden Animals release, Why Is Bear Billowing? might be marked out as part of a bit of a Devendra Banhart revival. With artwork that's all but identical to the bearded one's Rejoicing In The Hands album, Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez's debut lets you know what direction it's heading in from the outset. The Cuban-born songwriter is no mere copyist though: his articulately performed folk is eminently likable, and could only be described as mildly 'freaky'. Like Banhart though, there is a slightly whimsical feel to Alvarez's acoustic meanderings, and he does get through his fair share of animal references, but his 6-string skills elevate his songs beyond the norm, making tracks like 'Pinecone Eyes' stand out above much of the sub-Espers fare that's been doing the rounds on the American folk scene recently. Recommended.
