**c54, colour j-card with colour insert** "So Cal artist Julia Holter's latest cassette is a very personal collection of dreamy home-recording style pop ballads. Lush piano and synthesizer instrumentation meld with Holter's ethereal vocals in cinematic and melancholy arrangements." One of the most substantial offerings from Burlington, Vermont's NNA label is also Julia Holter's most impressive release to date. From what we can glean, she's released tracks on Monika Enterprise and Dublab, but 'Live Recordings' is really quite special. From within some lushed-out other zone as romantic as Leyland Kirby's, suggestive as Atelecine's and as virtually real as Laurel Halo's she unsheathes a sublimely delicate and tenderly wrought sound Blissed vocals lure us into the ferric fug where she exists, clad in virginal white, gliding on dry ice and viewed through the interruption of a flickering analogue TV signal. The divide between her world and ours appears tissue thin at times, like when the sounds of Yelena Zhelezov's movie clips break the simulacra of 'Beast Wildest' and 'So Lillies', but it's opaque and visceral enough to keep your disbelief suspended from silken threads. This is the sort of music that makes listening to reams of shit worthwhile. Hugely recommended!
